Patterns of social mobility, the spread of an infection and phone calls made by the inhabitants of a city can be predicted with a new mathematical model, published in Nature, which improves the standard calculation used so far. The only parameter needed is the distribution of the population.

Knowing where there will be jams before the inhabitants of a geographical area go on vacation is possible thanks to this new mathematical model that predicts flows and transport with only the aforementioned parameter, the population distribution. The new formula improves the results of Zipf model, because it corrects data requirements of the standard method.

The radial model, presented in Nature, improves the accuracy of predictive tools based on flows of social movements, such as migration, transport, epidemiology and even phone calls. One of the most interesting applications is the study of populations without historical data. Unlike the previous method, the lack of information prevents to accurately predict the mobility of a given area. Read the rest of this entry »

Researchers at the University of Granada have developed a model to predict the severity of an accident from 18 variables. Their work has revealed that most fatal accidents occur after a collision or rollover, unlit road with drivers aged between 18 and 25 years and only one fatality.

Most fatal traffic accidents cause a single victim

Researchers have shown that using only seven of the 18 variables analyzed, it is possible to construct probabilistic models whose performance is comparable with those obtained using more variables. The 7 key variables are the type of accident, age of driver, atmospheric factors, the sex of the driver, the lighting, the number of injuries and the number of people involved in the accident. People who lead groups are moody, bold, outgoing and curious, as reflected in a study conducted by the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom). According to the mathematical model developed by the authors when the degree of conflict increases so does the number of leaders.

characteristics of the leader

Temperament determines a person’s ability to be a leader or follower. This was revealed by a study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). Researchers downplay the fact of having information or resources to become a leader, as established earlier work. Read the rest of this entry »
